my ‘routine’ after one year in public accounting

Watching ‘When Harry Met Sally’ outside in 70-degree weather.. lol @ the fall vibes in CA!

Hey hey!

How is your November going? I’m so excited for Thanksgiving next week… I 100% missed out on spending time with my family last year so I’m very hyped to be spending the holidays with them this time around!! Besides work (which has been very chill these past couple of weeks), I’ve been doing the usual: taking sunny walks, reading lots, lounging around with the fam, and watching Succession.

Today I wanted to share a little routine update! If you’ve been following, I started my full-time job in public accounting a year ago now (!) and shared my busy season routine back in March. I was pretty proud of sticking to that schedule… up until summer hit. What I’ve learned throughout this entire year is that following a strict routine during peak busy times is crucial, which happened to pretty much only be the later winter/spring months. For the remainder of the year, there really isn’t a need for me to stick to a routine. Like if I don’t have to get up at 6:30am to start grinding… I won’t, lol. It’ll be more like 7am or 7:30am wake-up. Plus, towards fall this past year, I physically couldn’t get up earlier than 7am hahaha it was so difficult, even with my 8.5 hours of sleep.

I also realized that my routine changes based on how many hours of daylight we get! Getting outside to take walks or go on runs is super important to me, so scheduling that into my day may mean shifting my entire day around. That’s honestly the beauty of work-from-home and why I actually love it so much. Currently, I am thinking about going into the office maybe once a week starting in the new year, so we’ll see if that changes anything.

Another factor that changes my routine is obviously the different tax compliance deadlines throughout the year. If I’m having a really chill day, week or month (like right now), I’ll log off early and call it a day. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve also accepted the fact that I’ll have to log on on Saturdays and Sundays on some weeks just to feel like I’m getting things off the to-do list. And honestly just logging on for an hour even feels better than being stressed out on Monday morning. (Pssst I also joke that that’s my remedy for combating the Sunday Scaries: work a little on Sunday too haha).

How about you? Has your routine changed at all in the past year? How do you feel about having no routine?

Stay well & healthy,

Jen
