YA has Changed my Perception on…. BOYS?!

Let’s be real here. We ALL have our favorite YA book boyfriends. I know that I have tons. Just to name off a few:

  • Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss
  • Daemon Black from Obsidian
  • Jem Carstairs from The Infernal Devices
  • Simon Lewis OR Jace Wayland from The Mortal Instruments
  • Drill Sergeant Stamm from Rites of Passage

So yes, I love my YA boys.

ABOUT ME… and My Relationship
with Boys in Real Life

If you didn’t know, I’m going to be a senior in high school come this fall. I have never dated anyone before. And while I’ve liked a few boys in my life, I’ve kind of noticed that my perception of boys haschanged ever since I started reading YA. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT.I’m not saying boys at my school are lining up to go out with me (.. because they’re not), but I’ve gotten SO PICKY about boys in my life. I mean sure, there are a few boys at my school that have a little crush on me (I have the best friends who tell me these things), but it’s not like I like them back. They almost… don’t live up to YA fictional boys. Is this super weird and fickle about me? IDK, AUTHORS ARE DOING THEIR JOB TOO WELL. My list of book boyfriends goes on forever, so you can imagine that I look for the same qualities in real-life boys, too. EXCEPT. It seems like none of the boys at my school are THIS swoon-worthy or to-die-for.

What does this mean for me? Well, I’m probably going to hold off on guys until college. I don’t even care that I’ve never had a boyfriend before high school is over. In a way, I’m completely satisfied with having plenty of book boyfriends. #YAFORLIFE

My Questions for You

So what about you all who have boyfriends or are MARRIED? I’m curious as to how that works out for you. Like when you swoon for a guy in a book, do you forget your boyfriend/husband entirely? THIS IS SUCH AN AWKWARD QUESTION. LOL and when girls in books kiss boys.. do you pictures your spouse? Okay I’ll stop asking questions now…BUT ACTUALLY. Am I completely alone in this? Has YA changed YOUR perception on boys in real life?
